Established in 2016, we are a company born from a desire to prevent food waste, leaves, and other organic discards from being landfilled. Our goal is to change people’s perception of organic materials that have traditionally been considered trash, and provide people with a simple, zero emissions, localized alternative to throwing these organic materials away. We pick up your food waste by bicycle trailer more than 90% of the time to avoid burning fossil fuels! We work to complete the “circle of life” for organic materials, turning your waste into compost used by our urban farm partners to grow food.
In America today, approximately 30 – 40% of landfills are filled with food waste that could have been turned into compost instead. This landfilled food waste slowly releases methane, a greenhouse gas up to eighty times more harmful to our environment than carbon dioxide.
When we prevent food waste and other organic discards from being landfilled, not only are we helping to slow down our country’s unsustainable landfill epidemic, we also help farmers, gardeners, and our environment by creating organic compost. Organic compost absorbs CO2 from our atmosphere, helping reverse the effects of climate change, and also makes an incredible soil aid to help farmers and gardeners grow healthier plants.
All of the finished compost we create from food waste, leaves, and other organic discards Circle Composters collect is donated to urban farmers in Philadelphia. So when you sign up for our services, you are helping Philly’s urban farmers grow healthier crops.
If you are a Philadelphia resident interested in composting, you will likely generate 30 – 40% less trash by using our services. You can feel great about preventing your organic food waste from going to landfill, while also helping us create organic compost for Philly’s urban farmers and gardeners.
If you run a daycare, school, cafe, restaurant, coffee shop, bakery, or other business with a commercial kitchen, our services could significantly reduce the amount of trash you create. This could lead to an ongoing cost savings for your organization on trash pickup and/or help you avoid costly overage fees if your regular trash containers tend to overflow. We also provide a means for food waste disposal compliance on your Philadelphia Department of Health / Office of Food Protection Food Facility Inspection Report.
As one of our composting partners (our customers are our partners), we hope you’ll tell your composting story and promote your environmentally conscious practices – we like to talk about the good work you do when we tell stories too.
